Each of the preparatory items in the sketchbook is a gem, and I particularly liked the various purple tones and textures of the aubergines and artichokes, the former so glossy they looked polished.
Mary Ann must have been spoilt for choice when she selected items for her finished assignment. The unusual composition appealed to Billy Showell, who is no stranger to the creation of a contemporary layout that is eye-catching and moves botanical painting away from the formality of its traditional presentation. For this piece she awarded a very inspiring 96 per cent, which must have been a great boost to Mary Ann’s confidence. She would now go from strength to strength.
